I have been waiting patiently to see this film for the past few months, ever since I first heard about it. I was not disappointed, though the film certainly has it’s bizarre moments, it is exactly the the bizarreness, weirdness, creepiness and overall intense acting on the parts of Banderas and Anaya that really captivate you… Or at least those were the qualities of the film that captivated me and held my attention through the slower moments of the film.

Banderas’s characters has been dealt a series of emotional traumas; his wife cheats on him, flees with him, is involved in a car crash which results in her being horrifically burnt and despite his best efforts she can not handle her new appearance and takes her life in front of their daughter, their daughter suffers from severe emotional trauma and has psychological issues from that point and is committed then upon her release she is sexually assaulted and associates her father as the rapist, she then follows her mother’s lead and ends her life too… We get the sense that Banderas’s character never likes to have that little control over things in his life, we also get a sense that his character has somehow laid all that has happened since his wife’s injuries at the moment she was burnt to within “a flicker of [her] life” and that if he could have prevented her burns and her subsequent suicide his daughter would be here, his family would be here.

The film is presented in a non-linear fashion, I kind of like this type of film-making, and I feel this method of telling a story worked particularly well with The Skin that I live In. The film starts with Banderas’s character at a Scientific/medical conference, revealing the details of his ‘new skin’ and giving an overview of how he went about perfecting the material. We also see interaction with the woman who is effectively his Guinea pig for the skin and we soon learn that she’s not exactly by her own free will and that the room she is kept in, though spacious and has all the trappings of a penthouse apartment is still nevertheless a locked cell.

After a house invasion by Ledgard’s half-brother that results in a brutal rape of Vera, we begin to drift into the past with title cards that display the number of years we travelling back, it never does get confusing and the film does a good job of communicating shifts in time.

Throughout this time we learn of the rape of Ledgard’s daughter and other family history that all helps to fill in the blanks and really helps to define all three of the main characters. But it’s also the segment of the film most likely to blow your mind and it wouldn’t be nice of me to reveal that bit of the story, it really would take away from the experience of seeing this film for the first time.

It’s also through the flashbacks that we come to follow the development of Ledgard’s experiments that lead to the creation of the skin and this is an explosion of intensity and just plain wow!

The film is superbly edited and scored well, the locations look amazing and every shot seems to pull you further into the lives of the three/four central characters of the piece. The acting too is well above what I expected for a film starring Antonio Banderas, I never rated him much as a dramatic actor but his controlling and ruthless yet calm demeanour really sell him as a slightly unhinged but human Scientist who was broken by his wife’s betrayal and the consequences that ensued.

I like the way the marketing and press for this film has stayed away from one of the crucial elements and characters of the film, I like that we do not know much at all about any of the characters but especially Vera. For I fear that had I gone into this film with a lot more than the basic, he’s a Scientist that wants to make a skin because his wife was burnt and he’s got a woman to trial it, I really would have not been as bowled over as I was in my first sitting, it was an unnerving revelation that brought back that weird cocktail of queasiness, horror and fascination that I had during the infamous Singing in the Rain rape sequence of Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.

There is an ample splashing of nudity as you might expect from a film which places it’s focus on Skin, and whilst Elena Anaya is a very pretty lady and has a smoking body the nudity here is rarely sexual and is either displayed during the course of a rape, coupled with violence or is just weird to watch given what has been revealed through the course of telling the story.
